Discrete Sequential Search

چکیده
Before the search it is impossible to predict how many looks will be necessary to locate the target. A policy is a plan of search that tells where the nth look will be made--should it be necessary. For any policy, if P ( k ) is the probabil i ty tha t the target is found on or before the kth look, C(]c) is the total cost of the first k looks, and C is the random total cost, then the expectation of C is2:

DISCRETE SIZE AND DISCRETE-CONTINUOUS CONFIGURATION OPTIMIZATION METHODS FOR TRUSS STRUCTURES USING THE HARMONY SEARCH ALGORITHM
Many methods have been developed for structural size and configuration optimization in which cross-sectional areas are usually assumed to be continuous. In most practical structural engineering design problems, however, the design variables are discrete. This paper proposes two efficient structural optimization methods based on the harmony search (HS) heuristic algorithm that treat both discret...
متن کاملSequential Competitive Facility Location Problem in a Discrete Planar Space
In this paper, there are two competitors in a planar market. The first competitor, called, the leader, opens new facilities. After that, the second competitor, the follower, reacts to the leader’s action and opens r new facilities. The leader and the follower have got some facilities in advance in this market. The optimal locations for leader and follower are chosen among predefined candida...
متن کاملPARTICLE SWARM-GROUP SEARCH ALGORITHM AND ITS APPLICATION TO SPATIAL STRUCTURAL DESIGN WITH DISCRETE VARIABLES
Based on introducing two optimization algorithms, group search optimization (GSO) algorithm and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, a new hybrid optimization algorithm which named particle swarm-group search optimization (PS-GSO) algorithm is presented and its application to optimal structural design is analyzed. The PS-GSO is used to investigate the spatial truss structures with discr...
متن کاملA Note on "Discrete Sequential Search with Group Activities"
This note comments on a paper published by Wagner and Davis ( Decision Sciences (2001), 32(4), 557–573 ) . These authors present an integer-programming model for the single-item discrete sequential search problem with group activities. Based on their experiments, they conjecture that the problem can be solved as a linear program. In this note, we provide a counterexample for which the optimal v...
متن کاملSYMBIOTIC ORGANISMS SEARCH AND HARMONY SEARCH ALGORITHMS FOR DISCRETE OPTIMIZATION OF STRUCTURES
In this work, a new hybrid Symbiotic Organisms Search (SOS) algorithm introduced to design and optimize spatial and planar structures under structural constraints. The SOS algorithm is inspired by the interactive behavior between organisms to propagate in nature. But one of the disadvantages of the SOS algorithm is that due to its vast search space and a large number of organisms, it may trap i...
متن کاملA Discrete Hybrid Teaching-Learning-Based Optimization algorithm for optimization of space trusses
In this study, to enhance the optimization process, especially in the structural engineering field two well-known algorithms are merged together in order to achieve an improved hybrid algorithm. These two algorithms are Teaching-Learning Based Optimization (TLBO) and Harmony Search (HS) which have been used by most researchers in varied fields of science. The hybridized algorithm is called A Di...
